Education

A commitment to neurological education is a core value of the Department of Neurology. We teach the fundamentals of neuroscience and clinical neurology, and apply these in the classroom and at the bedside. Trainees range from undergraduates to medical students and residents to graduate students and clinical fellows.

  • Undergraduates in the College of the University of Chicago and graduate students enroll in courses in the Division of Biological Sciences that are taught by members of the Department.
  • Medical students in the Pritzker School of Medicine rotate through a required clinical clerkship in neurology, learning to apply skills of hands-on examination and clinical assessment to patients with neurological conditions.
  • Residency training in neurology is an intensive three-year program of active learning in applying principles of clinical neurology to the diagnosis and treatment of the wide range of neurological diseases. Our highly–regarded residency program produces graduates who go on to be leaders in academic neurology and in clinical practice.
  • Specialized clinical fellowship programs led by our expert faculty, offer completion of clinical training and career preparation in a range of neurological subspecialties.

Residency

The Neurology residency training program at The University of Chicago introduces residents to an immersive clinical experience in inpatient and ambulatory neurology. Residents are trained didactically and with hands-on experience to fully prepare for neurological practice. At the same time, by exposure to an excellent academic and research environment, residents are provided experience that allows them to make well-informed career decisions about the wide range of career choices. Resident physicians completing this three-year program are eligible for board certification from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Many program graduates have excelled in academic neurology as well as in community and private practice.
