Neurocritical Care
At the University of Chicago Medicine, our neurointensive care team delivers expert, cutting-edge treatment for life-threatening brain injuries and neurological emergencies. From traumatic brain injuries and stroke to prolonged seizures (status epilepticus), we provide rapid diagnosis, advanced monitoring, and innovative therapies to optimize recovery. With extensive training and experience, our specialists are committed to delivering the highest level of care, ensuring the best possible outcomes for every patient.
Located in the Center for Care and Discovery — Hyde Park, our dedicated 24-bed neurocritical care unit, provides advanced multimodal monitoring and specialized treatment for patients with life-threatening neurologic conditions. Designed as a state-of-the-art healing environment, the unit combines cutting-edge technology with life-threatening neurologic conditions/ Designed as a state-of-the-art healing environment, the unit combines cutting-edge technology with a patient-centered approach to promote recovery and well-being.
In the Neuro ICU, a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, therapists, pharmacist and dietitians provides coordinated, patient-centered care. With expertise in managing complex brain and spinal cord injuries, our team collaborates with neurosurgeons, interventional neuroradiologists, trauma surgeons, and other specialists to tailor treatment plans. Through advanced monitoring and a compassionate approach, we help patients recover and transition to the next phase of healing.

Clinical Services
The section of Neurocritical Care provides comprehensive treatment for patients with acute and high-risk neurological conditions, including traumatic brain injury, stroke, seizures, and other critical disorders affecting the brain and spinal cord.
-
Neurotrauma Consult Service
Neurotrauma consultation for polytrauma patients with concurrent traumatic brain injury, cerebrovascular injury or spinal cord injury outside neuro ICU -
Neurocritical Care Consult Service
The Neurocritical Care consult service provides expert consultation for complex neurological conditions outside the NeuroICU, including status epilepticus, post-cardiac arrest neuroprognostication, hepatic encephalopathy with risk of cerebral edema, and neuromonitoring for high-risk critical care patients with ARDS, MCS devices, and intracranial hemorrhages. -

Training Programs
We offer rigorous training in neurocritical care through our ACGME- and UCNS-accredited fellowship and robust neurology residency, preparing future leaders in clinical care, research, and academic medicine.
-
Neurocritical Care Fellowship
A one or two-year ACGME and UCNS-accredited program for neurological critical care training -
Residency Program Curriculum
The Neuro-ICU service cares for critically ill neurological and neurosurgical patients in the Neuro-ICU, as well as neurocritical care consultations in other ICUs. The Neurology Resident is exposed to, and is responsible for, the care of these patients, which will broaden their knowledge and experience via a variety of clinical situations.

Research
The primary thrust of the neurocritical care program is clinical and educational. However, we are seriously committed to provocative scholarly projects dedicated to advancing our field. While our portfolio of projects is highly dynamic, our primary areas of present activity are listed in the following sections. Since the neurocritical care program is organizationally linked to the vascular neurology program, reference is made to the research delineated in the cerebrovascular section for further information about additional research on ischemic stroke (laboratory and clinical). For prospective trainees, there are two additional points to emphasize. We embrace working with medical students and residents, and many of the projects below have included trainees both in project design, formal presentation at national/international conferences, and manuscript preparation. In addition, these projects are derived from the present faculty in our section, and we are presently recruiting a third faculty who will bring additional areas of interest to our research endeavors, particularly in the laboratory.
Neurocritical Care Faculty
Our faculty specialize in the care of critically ill neurological patients, advancing research, education, and innovative treatments in a high-acuity, team-based setting.
