The purpose of this study is to test the safety and effectiveness of a novel intensive medical management treatment of asymptomatic narrowing of the internal carotid artery with aggressive medical therapy alone versus aggressive medical therapy accompanied by either surgical removal of the blockage (carotid endarterectomy) or opening up of the artery with an expandable balloon and a stent (carotid angioplasty and stunting). |
